Frequently Asked Questions

What is Carbon Crimes?

Carbon Crimes tracks publicly-available flight data and associates it with celebrities and wealthy individuals who own private jets. We calculate the carbon footprint of those flights and publish the results.

How do you track flights?

We use ADS-B data — a public radio signal that aircraft broadcast containing their location and identification. We match ICAO24 transponder codes (unique identifiers for each aircraft) with known ownership records to link flights to their owners.

How is the CO2 calculated?

We calculate emissions based on the aircraft's fuel burn rate (gallons per hour), the duration of each flight, and a conversion factor of 9.57 kg of CO2 per gallon of jet fuel. This gives a conservative estimate — it only covers fuel burned in the air and doesn't include landing/takeoff cycles or manufacturing emissions.

What are carbon offsets?

Carbon offsets are investments in projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere — things like forest preservation, direct air capture, and clean energy. When you buy offsets on this site, your money goes to a curated basket of high-quality offset projects.

Why should I buy offsets for a celebrity?

Mostly as a statement. It's a small, concrete action that says: someone noticed, and someone cared enough to do something about it. We also hope it draws attention to the disparity between the carbon footprints of the ultra-wealthy and everyone else.

Do the celebrities know?

We publish everything publicly, so in principle yes. We don't contact them directly.

How do I suggest a celebrity to track?
